Well, let's leave Ukraine now and head to South Korea, where thousands of teachers are going on strike and attending a mass rally to honor colleagues who have taken their own lives.

School staff are demanding better protection against bullying by the parents of pupils after a young teacher died by suicide in July.

교사들은 지난 7월에 한 젊은 교사가 자살한 후, 학부모 괴롭힘으로부터 더 나은 보호를 요구하고 있습니다.

Well, let's go live now to Seoul, where our correspondent Jane McKenzie is.

And Jane, it looks like you are at a protest, at a rally. What is happening where you are?

제인, 현재 시위, 집회 현장에 계시는 것 같습니다. 현지 상황은 어떤가요?

Yes, this is now the seventh week that teachers here in Seoul have been protesting.

네, 이곳 서울에서 교사들이 7주째 집회 중에 있습니다.

Well, actually, across South Korea, they've been coming here to protest every single weekend, and it has culminated today in this national strike of teachers.

실제로 대한민국 전역에서 교사들은 매주 이곳에 시위하기 위해 모이고 있으며, 교사들의 전국적 시위가 오늘 절정으로 이어지고 있습니다.

The weekend we saw 100,000 teachers take to the streets.

주말에 10만 명의 교사들이 거리로 나왔습니다.

And this all started with the death of a young teacher, 23 year old, back in July.

이 모든 일은 지난 7월에 23세의 젊은 교사가 자살한 사건에서 시작되었습니다.

Now, the young teacher died by suicide and it emerged after her death that she had been suffering with pressure from work, but that she had also been dealing with complaints from parents.

젊은 교사는 스스로 목숨을 끊었으며, 그녀는 업무 압박을 겪고 있었지만 학부모로부터의 민원도 처리하고 있었다는 사실이 그녀의 사망 이후에 드러났습니다.

And what this did here has opened this Pandora's box, really, where teachers all across the country have started sharing their own stories about how they are frequently harassed by teachers here who call them all hours of the day on their mobile phones and a weekend complaining.

Essentially, they say these are overbearing parents who are just completely fixated on their children's success at school.

그들은 자신들이 아이들의 학교 성적에 병적으로 집착하는 학부모로부터 자주 괴롭힘을 받고 있다고 합니다.

And, you know, some of these complaints are serious that teachers are having to deal with.

그리고 이들 학부모의 민원 중에는 교사에게 매우 심각한 내용도 있습니다.

The teachers say that they can be accused of child abuse if they try to restrain violent children or if they tried to send children out of the class.

교사들은 폭력적인 학생들을 저지하려고 하거나 수업에서 학생을 교실 밖으로 내보내려고 할 때 아동학대로 신고될 수 있다고 주장합니다.

And they can be accused of emotional abuse if they just tell children off.

또한 교사들은 아이들을 나무라는 것만으로도 정서적 학대로 고발당할 수 있다고 합니다.

So they say that it's reached the point where they don't even feel safe to teach or discipline their children.

그래서 교사들은 이제 자신들이 가르치거나 학생을 훈육하는 것조차 안전하지 않다고 느낀다고 말합니다.

You just mentioned there that there have been a number of these rallies taking place.

This is a larger one. Is there any sign that these teachers are being listened to the government schools listening to them.

이번 집회는 규모가 큰 편인 것 같은데, 정부나 학교 측에서 교사들의 요구에 어떤 반응이 있었나요?

The government is listening. And it has said, "Look, we hear your cries.".

정부는 교사들의 외침을 듣고 있으며 "우리는 여러분들의 호소를 듣고 있습니다."라고 밝혀왔습니다.

They have actually announced a whole range of new measures to try and protect teachers better.

실제로 정부는 교사들을 보다 잘 보호하기 위한 새로운 조치들을 발표했습니다.

They brought in new guidelines just a couple of days ago, which should, in theory, give teachers more control to discipline their students.

며칠 전에 새로운 지침을 도입했는데, 이론적으로나마 교사들에게 학생 훈육에 있어 더 많은 권한을 부여할 것으로 예상됩니다.

But the teachers here, they want a more systemic reform.

그러나 시위 중인 교사들은 보다 제도적인 개혁을 원합니다.

They want the government to look at this Child Welfare Act, which they say parents are exploiting in order to get rid of teachers they don't like.

교사들은 학부모들이 좋아하지 않는 교사를 쫓아내고자 악용하는 것으로 보고 있는 ‘아동복지법’을 검토해 달라고 요구하고 있습니다.

This is the act which says that teachers who are accused of child abuse can be removed from their post.

이 법은 아동학대 혐의로 고발된 교사들을 직위에서 해임할 수 있는 내용을 담고 있습니다.

But this taps into a much deeper societal issue here.

하지만 현 사태는 한국 사회의 더 깊은 문제와 연관이 있습니다.

South Korea is a hyper competitive society, and so much here hinges on academic success.

대한민국은 초경쟁 사회이며 학생들의 학업 성적에 정말 많은 것이 달려 있습니다.

So the parents here feel this enormous pressure that their children have to do well at school.

따라서 이곳 학부모들은 자녀가 학교에서 잘 해야 한다는 엄청난 압박을 느끼고 있습니다.

And that pressure, of course, filters down to the children, and clearly we're learning, to the teachers as well.

그 압박은 당연히 자녀들에게 영향을 미치며, 분명히 교사들에게도 영향을 미칩니다.

As there are many here who say that this isn't just about fixing this problem in classrooms, that people really hear the government and the policy makers should be looking at reforming Korea's entire approach to education.
